At Ozinga, my role centers around collaboration and precision within the Midwest Ready-Mix division. I work closely with customers throughout the bidding and construction process, providing tailored mix designs to meet their needs. My day-to-day responsibilities involve reviewing project drawings and specifications, ensuring each mix design aligns with both engineer approvals and project requirements. Alongside this, our team prioritizes creating mixes that are not only economical and practical but also optimal and sustainable. The ultimate goal is to deliver solutions that strike the perfect balance between performance and environmental responsibility.
"The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program played a huge role in preparing me for this career. When I enrolled in the program, I didn’t have any prior experience in the concrete industry. However, CIM equipped me with the foundational knowledge and hands-on experience I needed to step confidently into the field."
My journey with Ozinga began in the R&D lab, where I started as a technician. Over time, my curiosity about the production side of the company grew, leading me to transition into my current position. Choosing Ozinga was an easy decision, largely because of the company’s core values. Being family-owned, the organization fosters a unique culture where every employee feels like part of the family. This sense of inclusion and support creates an environment unlike any other. Another aspect of Ozinga that resonates deeply with me is the company’s commitment to innovation. From implementing cutting-edge technology to using sustainable materials, Ozinga is constantly working toward achieving its ambitious net-zero sustainability goals.
Each day, I apply lessons from courses like plan reading, fundamentals of concrete, and applications of concrete construction. These classes gave me the tools to succeed in my role and laid the groundwork for my professional growth.
During my time at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), CIM provided me with incredible opportunities to broaden my industry knowledge and skills. One of the key elements of the program was its focus on internships and real-world experience. I interned with Turner Construction and Master Builders during my senior year, experiences that allowed me to see how all the pieces of a project come together. These hands-on opportunities helped me connect classroom theory to practical application. Beyond internships, I was fortunate to participate in unique global projects, including a coral reef rehabilitation effort in the Dominican Republic, the Constructionarium program in the United Kingdom, and an internship in the United Arab Emirates. These experiences provided a diverse perspective on the construction and concrete industry, enhancing my understanding of its global impact.
For anyone considering the CIM program, I wholeheartedly recommend it, especially if you find satisfaction in turning ideas into reality. The program not only offers a solid education but also immerses students in an industry where teamwork, planning, and budgeting are key components of success. The skills you gain from CIM will stay with you throughout your career, equipping you to lead and contribute meaningfully to every project you undertake. If you’re eager to join a field where innovation meets creativity and collaboration, CIM provides the perfect foundation to help you thrive.
