How did you become involved with this school and the CIM program?

The Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program was launched in 1996 at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) as the first four-year bachelor’s degree dedicated specifically to preparing managers for the concrete industry. By 2004, the National Steering Committee (NSC) began pursuing the objective of expanding the CIM program regionally.

As part of this effort, in the early 2000s, CIM staff and administrators at MTSU—backed by major concrete industry associations—secured a $600,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to support the expansion of the program to additional universities. Being hired for administrative support coordinating the logistics of expansion, timelines, communication with sister CIM universities. After the grant concluded, shifting into the role of Executive Aid with internal coordination, overseeing ongoing partnerships, supporting the CIM Director and steering committee, facilitating meetings, and ensuring continuity of the CIM program across its partner institutions.

Why should incoming students consider CIM as a major course of study?

CIM students are fortunate to have strong industry partnerships and support. This is what truly sets the program apart from a traditional Construction Management or Engineering major. From industry socials and employer visits on campus to travel opportunities that connect students directly with professionals, the CIM major offers unmatched access to the field. Students are especially grateful for the industry-sponsored scholarships awarded throughout their academic journey.

Can you describe the different career paths that graduates of the CIM program can take?

A graduate can choose their own path in the concrete industry within the industry such as Human Resources Specialist, Superintendent, Territory Sales Manager, Operations Manager, Business Development Representative, Association Director, Safety Specialist, Field Engineer. Whether you’re interested in technical work, leadership, people management, or creative problem-solving, the concrete industry has a place for you.

What is unique about the graduates of the CIM program?

A big part of being in the concrete industry is the connections you make while you’re still in school. Through internships, networking events, and hands-on experiences, you’ll build relationships that often turn into lifelong friendships and professional connections.

Even though the concrete industry is massive and far-reaching, it has a unique family feel—especially for CIM (Concrete Industry Management) graduates. There’s a strong sense of community, support, and shared purpose that sets this industry apart. You’re not just starting a career—you’re becoming part of a network that will support and grow with you throughout your professional life.

What are your thoughts about the industry/academic partnership between CIM and its industry partners?

CIM students are fortunate to have strong industry partnerships and support. This is what truly sets the program apart from a traditional Construction Management or Engineering major. From industry socials and employer visits on campus to travel opportunities that connect students directly with professionals, the CIM major offers unmatched access to the field. Students are especially grateful for the industry-sponsored scholarships awarded throughout their academic journey.

What are your thoughts about the partnership between CIM and its Patrons?

I often say that CIM could not perform nearly as effectively on a local level without the support of our CIM Patrons. Their impact goes far beyond fundraising, they consistently show up for our students. Whether it’s attending student events, providing mentorship, connecting students with industry, or offering valuable input on academic matters, their involvement makes the CIM experience truly unique.

Our local Patrons also serve as ambassadors for the program, actively recruiting and promoting CIM within the industry. Their dedication ensures that students, faculty, and the program as a whole continue to thrive.

Why should companies in the concrete industry get involved in the CIM program?

The concrete industry holds the CIM degree in high regard. Employers benefit from graduates who bring both strong concrete knowledge and valuable certifications. CIM students enter the workforce ready to contribute from day one, setting themselves apart from their peers.

How does the CIM program benefit the concrete industry?

From day one, CIM students bring knowledge that sets them apart. The industry plays a key role in shaping the program, ensuring the curriculum and certifications align with real-world needs and prepare students for success. Expanding industry involvement with CIM will only create greater value—not just for students, but for the companies that hire them.

The history of CIM speaks for itself. Our graduates have built a strong track record of success, met the growing needs of the industry while driving its progress forward. By continuing to supply skilled professionals, CIM ensures the industry will remain supported and strengthened for generations to come.

What is your vision for the CIM program?

Concrete lasts a lifetime—and so does the value of a CIM degree. My vision is for this unique program to continue growing, preparing students who will not only support but strengthen the concrete industry for generations. Through education, industry partnership, and opportunity, CIM will remain a lasting foundation for both students and the companies they serve.
