"The Path Forward" Update

Student With Hard Hat At the May 5 National Steering Committee (NSC) Board of Directors meeting, Eugene Martineau, Executive Director provided a "Path Forward" update on the program. The program is currently at the end of the initial five year financial commitment to expansion and has expanded from one to five established programs with fully functioning patrons groups. The NSC and its committees are performing activities as outlined by the long range plan and outside revenues account for well over 50% of annual revenues. Most importantly, enrollment in the CIM program has grown from 100 to well over 550 today.

The next steps, as outlined by Martineau, include the continuing development of the CIM Executive MBA program which is targeted to launch in fall of 2012 as well as targeting new funding resources/commitments with a concentraton on the continued growth of the annual CIM Auction at The World of Concrete. Moving forward, the NSC will also be finalizing the development of a program funding formula as well as development of a collaborative research network throughout CIM. A focus will be placed on the development of a Continuous Quality Improvement and Compliance Certification (CQICC) which will include a 5 year audit of each program tied to ROI.

Finally, the NSC will be reviewing its structure and roles moving forward, as well as succession planning for both officers and executive director, to ensure it continues to best serve the CIM program and the industry.

The "Path Forward" will be formally discussed at a special meeting in Dallas on July 12, 2011.

Once again this year, spring signals CIM graduation at four of our five universities. We are thrilled to announce that approximately 74 young men and women graduated with a degree in CIM in May and are prepared to enter the concrete industry. L Orama

According to Dr. Mahgoub at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), all of his May 16 graduates are working full time for well-known companies such as Sika, Eastern Concrete, Silvi, Turner, and Craig. Dr. Heather Brown at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) also commented that her students found full time employment in areas of production, sales, service, and concrete contracting.

CIM Presented At Recent CAMRA Meeting

At a recent Concrete and Masonry-Related Association (CAMRA) meeting, NSC Board member and President of the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) Robert Garbini presented an overview of the CIM program to the association membership in attendance. Garbini's presentation included a history of CIM as well as updates on enrollment Bob Garbini and graduation numbers.

The goal of the presentation was to provide information to CAMRA about CIM and to continue to broaden participation in the NSC. This participation will provide graduates with an even more diverse career path within the concrete industry. As the CIM motto states, "advancing the concrete industry by degrees," the NSC believes that the greater number of graduates with degrees in CIM that populate the broader industry, the better the industry will be for everyone.

MTSU Logo MTSU CIM Works With TCA On Net Zero Shelter

Tennessee Concrete Association (TCA) is working on an exciting project with Middle Tennessee groups from the local AIA and USGBC chapters, and faculty from Middle Tennessee State University and Lipscomb University, to design and build a simple, modular shelter (featuring concrete construction) that could be quickly built for immediate shelter needs after a disaster such as the recent flooding in Nashville. The module could then be incorporated into a larger permanent dwelling on the site. One of our design goals is to make the project a net-zero impact structure, and we will be developing a masters-level classroom curriculum on Integrated Project Design as we go. This class will be utilized in the Masters curriculum that is currently being developed at MTSU for the CIM program.

The project will feature a number of innovative products and techniques to help us achieve net-zero status. If you have a product that you would like to feature in this project, contact Alan Sparkman at TCA to discuss.

CIM Student Profile: Leighton Reynolds, MTSU

  Leighton Reynolds

Why did you choose the CIM program and MTSU?

When investigating which career path I would take after graduating high school, my brother Nathaniel Reynolds, a CIM graduate, encouraged me to research MTSU and the CIM program. He continuously expressed how kind and helpful the CIM faculty and staff were to their students. I realized that by being a part of the CIM program I would not only have a great support system, but get opportunities for a job in the industry.

What is your current major and anticipated graduation date?

I am focusing on the production sales and service of the CIM major with a minor in business. I intend on graduating December 2012.

Have you completed any internships while at MTSU? If so, could you tell us a little more about your experiences?

The internship that I completed consisted of producing precast concrete products. My experience was labor intensive and gave me a chance to further my hands-on learning experience with finishing concrete in precast molds. The experience was very worthwhile because it taught me about colored concrete, testing and curing procedures, and the difference in the mix design of precast concrete and regular slab concrete.

Based on my internship, I believe having a hands-on experience with concrete is just as good, if not better, of an opportunity to learn about the material than being in the classroom learning from a professor.

How has the CIM program prepared you for the "real world"?

The program has taught me the importance of basing all decisions that I make around not only what is best for the company I work for, but what is best for my surrounding environment as well as the local community. While working for a concrete company, there are many environmental problems that could arise if the appropriate decisions and precautions are not taken.

This program has also taught me that accountability and demonstrating a proper code of ethics is everything; not only in the concrete industry but in my personal life as well. By considering the environment and the surrounding community, any one individual has the ability to better the world locally and globally if businesses start to follow the actions you convey.

What advice would you give to current CIM students?

The advice that I would give CIM students is to not lose the eagerness to learn and to have the courage to ask questions. Many internships that you will be involved with in the future will teach you many things and have the potential of teaching more if you simply ask questions. Don't stress over the thought of going into an environment and assuming that the workers around you will expect you to know exactly what you are doing because you won't and they know that. An internship is an experience that prepares you for the "real world." Like we have heard all through our education, the only dumb question is the question not asked.
